Michael Lachney has a background in video production and media studies. He is an in- and after-school mentor for Chicago’s Digital Youth Network. Throughout the last two years Michael has taught video production and fan fiction courses to middle school students. He plans enroll at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the fall of 2012, as a Science and Technology Studies doctoral student.

As part of the Digital Youth Network’s (DYN) 2011-2012 professional development, we have set out to explore how critical media literacy can help Chicago middle school students become responsible and savvy digital producers. Through hours of discussion and self-reflection, we have decided that the challenge to integrate critical theory into our tech-heavy digital production curriculum is no easy task.
